Tim wants Jill to throw out some of her clothes or he will remodel the closet. Brad has punched a boy in school who called him names after hugging his Dad. Tim lifts a heavy load of books after Jill tells him not to and pulls a groin muscle.

When Jill's parents come to visit for Christmas, her mother complains that Jill's father just wants to spend his retirement sitting around the house. Tim and Jill have three sons Brad, Randy and Mark.

She agrees when he promises it will be a fast and small project. Tim's brother Marty arrives and tells Tim he is leaving his wife. Tim and Jill comfort Al when his mother dies; a new producer makes Tim's job at "Tool Time" very unpleasant. Brad and Randy take from the charity money they've collected.

Each son has their own quirks, Brad is into sports, Randy is smart, and Mark is the younger sensitive brother. They all live together in Detroit, Michigan. As said before, Tim often causes mayhem around with machines as well as his marriage.
Randy gets caught in a lie when his much older computer pen pal shows up unexpectedly for a visit. Jill's sister Carrie, a globetrotting photographer, comes to visit, and their different paths in life create conflict. Meanwhile, Tim can't seem to stop arguing with his brother Marty, and the strife even spills over to create friction between Al and his brother Cal. Tim invites his friends over to watch the Super Bowl, but his plans are thrown off when Jill comes down with the flu. Tim wants to install a central vacuum system and Jill is opposed.

When Tim tells that Dave Gibbons is coming, Jill wants to introduce him to Karen. Tim can see what Jill has in mind and protests - he needs Dave in the garage. Harry from the hardware store has a mild heart attack as Tim turns 40. Tim is worried and goes off the deep end about getting healthy. The boys give him a Tool Man figure made out of tools, and Jill gets him a ride on a jet (more power!).
When Brad flunks in math Randy suggests that he tell Jill that Jennifer left him and he's depressed because of it. This works, until Jennifer turns up and Jill learns the truth. Tim and Jill have to teach Brad and they find out that multiplying compound fractions is not as ...

Comedy about the host of a small do-it-yourself TV show, his independent wife and their trio of growing boys. The series is based on the stand-up comedy routines of star Tim Allen. A34731.5Bob Vila re-appears on Tool Time and challenges Tim to a lawnmower race for charity. Determined to beat Vila once and for all, Tim inserts a jet engine from a helicopter into the lawnmower. Meanwhile, Brad and Randy create "The Tadpole Secrecy Test" for Mark, who wants them to play with him.

Tim reveals to Al that he is going to put the 350 Chevy engine in his hot rod. Tim thought Al would be spending the weekend with Greta (last seen in season 1 episode 21, "Al's Fair in Love and War"). Karen has broken up with Greg and is visiting Jill.
